CHILD KILLED BY ICE WAGON.
Chased by One of Her Playmates Under the Wheels-Mother Became Hysterical.
Kunigunde FRAUENHOFER, 6 years old, who lived with the parents at 177 Scholes
street, in the Eastern District, was almost instantly killed by being run
over by an ice wagon in front of her home late yesterday afternoon. The
wagon was owned and driven by Gustav BREUESCH of 480 Rodney street. The
child was playing tag on the sidewalk in front of a home. The ice wagon, to
which was attached a team of horses, stood close to the curb. BREUESCH had
just served the child's mother with ice and on his way to his wagon spoke to
the little girl. He had mounted to his seat and started his horses when one
of the girl's companions chased her and in order to escape she ran toward the
wagon. She missed her footing and fell behind the horse nearest to the curb.
As the child fell BREUTSCH hauled hard on the reins in his efforts to stop
the horses, but the front wheel passed over her head, crushing it. BREUTSCH
leaped to the street and picked up the child. He was dazed by the accident
but when he realized the child's condition he collapsed. An ambulance
removed the child to St. Catherine's Hospital where she died fifteen minutes
later just as her mother arrived. The attendant tried to calm her but when
she realized her daughter was dead she fell to the floor in a faint. (When)
she revived she became hysterical and required the attention of the doctor
after which she was removed home.
BREUTSCH was found by the police in the store where he carried the child
surrounded by a crowd of people who were trying to console him. He is a
large powerful man but he sobbed like a child when told that the girl was
dead. He was taken to the Bushwick avenue station where a charge of homicide
was made against him. He was released later on bail.

The Rev. Charles WOOD, D.D.
The Rev. Charles WOOD, D.D., for 21 years assistant pastor of the First
Presbyterian Church, and stationed at the City Park Chapel during that time,
died at his home, 585 Quincy street, Monday, in his 82nd year. Dr. WOOD was
born in Salem, New Jersey, in 1818, his parents being Caleb and Naomi WOOD,
well-known Quakers of that town. When Charles was an infant his father died
and his early life was a struggle with poverty. While working at his trade
of carpenter he prepared for college, and graduated from Lafayette College,
Pennsylvania, in 1846, and from the Princeton Theological Seminary in 1848.
He went first to Annapolis, Maryland, on missionary work. He was married to
Miss Mary Ann STOCK on May 26, 1849 and went to Texas as a pioneer
missionary, she going with him. He worked after several years and returned
to Fox Hill, where he occupied the pulpit of the Presbyterian Church for five
years. His health broke down and he went into mercantile business, as a
traveling salesman, being known throughout Pennsylvania as a "Cracker Baker
Missionary." He combined preaching with his secular work. It was mainly in
the mining districts. He resumed the ministry when he recovered his health
and was for three years at Absecom, and three years at Black Rock, New
Jersey. In 1867 he came to Brooklyn, where he has lived ever since. He was
pastor of the City Park Capital from 1867 till 1888, when ill health forced
his retirement from active work. He had since been the chaplain of the New
York Presbyterian Home for Aged Women and did general missionary work in the
Greater New York, up to within three months of his death. He died from paralysis.
His wife died about two months ago, since which time he had been in failing
health. He leaves two children, Samuel M. LLOYD and Mrs. Crossman LYON,
beside five grandchildren. The funeral services will be held at his home
this evening, at 8:00, the Rev. Dr. L. MASON CLARK officiating, assisted by
the Rev. Robert J. KENT. The burial will be at Newtown, Bucks County,
Pennsylvania.
