SLAIN GUNMAN LEFT LOVETT'S MEN FOR UALE
Victim of New Gang War Revealed as "Deserter" - Family of James SENTER
Questioned by Police Here
The body of the bullet-riddled man found in a pit at Meeker avenue and
Porter street early today has been identified as that of James SENTER, of 237
Kent street. A brother, Joseph SENTER, made the identification, but has been
unable to shed any light on his brother's activities that might serve to
establish a motive for the murder.
The slain man apparently had no business connections, although he was
always well dressed and seemed to have plenty of funds. He worked occasional
ly along the waterfront, Greenpoint police said. The police believe he had
been identified with a bootlegging gang and link his death with the slaying
Sunday of Frank UALE.
Detective Abraham STERN, of the Greenpoint station, is credited with
having found SENTER'S brother. The detective viewed the body and said he had
seen the man several times before, but could not quite place him. STERN
racked his mind for a clue and finally recalled that the man bore a close
resemblance to Joseph SENTER. He rushed to the Kent street number and
brought Joseph to the murder scene. Joseph collapsed after he had viewed the
body.
According to Capt. Daniel J. CAREY, SENTER was arrested by Detective
SAUNDERS on Nov. 16, 1921. SENTER was accused of grand larceny but was
discharged when brought to trial.
GIVES INFORMATION
Joseph returned to the police station later today and gave information to
the police that leads them to believe the slain man was in some way
identified with the murder of Edward LYNCH, gangster, who was slain last
April 16.
The slain man left his Kent street home yesterday morning. He told his
brother he was going to Coney Island and that was the last he was seen by
members of his family. His mother and his two sisters were brought to the
police station for questioning by Capt. CAREY.
Billy JACOBS, president of the Longshoreman's Union was also questioned.
JACOBS is thought to be able to shed some light on SENTER'S past through his
contact with the slain man during the brief and infrequent periods that he
worked as a loader along the Greenpoint shore.
Police revealed that SENTER was a member of the old Bill LOVETT gang but
deserted that group to become one of Frank UALE'S henchmen.
