ONE DIES AS POLICE SAVE MANY IN TENEMENT FIRE;FLAMES THREATEN LUNA
Janitor Meets Deasth in Williamsburg Build-
ing After Scorning Rescue---Fireman Fight
$20,000 Blaze in Famous Coney Island
Amusement Centre More Than 2 Hours.
In two early morning fires, one in Williamsburg and the other in Coney Island,
one man was burned to death, a dozen rescued and the whole of Luna Park,
famous playground, was threatened by flames for more than two hours.
Both fires caused damage estimated at $30,000, the amusement resort
bearing the major part of the destruction with loss believed to be $20,000.
Heroic work of two policemen in the Williamsburg fire which destroyed
the tenements at 49 and 51 Grand Street, kept the loss in life at one.
Arson is suspected.
Janitor Killed.
The man fatally burned was John DOMBROWSKY, janitor of 49 Grand Street.
An inexplicable impulse drove the man back to death just at the moment
of rescue. While willing hands were waiting to lead down a ladder to
safety, DOMBROWSKY plunged back n the burning building. Wedged between
a bureau and a wall, the body of the janitor was found later charred
almost beyond recognition.
Policemen James MINARY and Edward DUNN of Bedford Avenue Station,
assisted by John BREEN, civilian, led in the rescues. MINAR and BREEN
were nearby when the flames broke out in the basement of the tenement.
They ran to a nearby lumber yard and borrowed a ladder.
In the meantime, trapped on lower floors, occupants of both tenements
had been driven to the top and third floors of the same dwellings.
MINARY and BREEN, now assisted by Edward DUNN, climbed to the roof of
the houses at 47 Grand Street and crawled along a narrow coping.
Among Rescued.Among those they assisted along the ledge were
Mrs. Mary SOBIESKI, 44, a widow, and her two children, John, 7, and James, 5;
Mary DOMBROWSKY, the janitor's widow;
Sarah KAMINSKY, and her husband John KAMINSKY.

FURRIER DEATH UNDER INQUIRY
Shot to Death in Home---Two Escape.
Police in Manhattan woked on three theories to-day to solve the murder of
Louis MEYERSON, a furrier of 315 East Twelfth Street, at 2 A.M. He was
shot to death by one of two intruders as he got up from bed to investigate
a noise. The strangers escaped through a window and disappeared over
backyard fences. Acting Deputy Chief Inspector, Patrick BRADY and Captain HAMMELL
thought MEYERSON might have been slain because he had a considerable amount of
jewelry in his home. Another theory was that though he was not a picket,
he was a union furrier in a trade beset by union warfare. Finally it was
thought he might have been mistaken for someone else involved in an Italian vendetta.
MEYERSON'S wife Rebecca, and their two children, Herbert 5, and Selma, 3,
were awakened by the shot. Their cries brought Patrolman HALL of Fifth
Street Station, who summoned an ambulance from Bellvue Hospital, but
MEYERSON was beyond aid.

JOHN GILLIGAN, 33 years old, a taxi driver, of 21-78 Sixth avenue,

of the apartment house where he lived and asked PHILIP SMITH, the

Shortly after GILLIGAN left the store his unconscious, crushed form was
lying on the pavement. He had jumped from his fourth-story window,
according to a neighbor.
When police broke into his apartment they said they found a broken belt
strap on a nail in the kitchen, which they believe he had used in an
effort to hang himself, and all the gas jets of the kitchen stove open.
The pad which GILLIGAN purchased bore an unfinished note. It read,

BOY IS KILLED; MENACE DRIVER
Angry Crowds Threaten Man After Fatal Mishap
An angry crowd of mothers and fathers threatened the driver of a heavy
automobile truck which to-day fatally injured 10-year-old CHRISTIANO
MONGELLO, of 508 President street, at Third avenue and Carroll street,
in the "Little Italy" section. The boy died three minutes after his
arrival at Methodist Episcopal Hospital, where he was taken by a
policeman.
THOMAS RUSSO, 26 years old, of 302 Sixth avenue, driver of the seven and
one-half ton truck which was filled with bags of cement, was extricated
from the angry mob after the accident by Patrolmen LEON GOULD and
HERBERT MASON, of the Bergen street station, who were compelled to wedge
their way in.
GOULD rescued RUSSO and took him to the police station, where he was
questioned. Meanwhile, MASON picked up the child and, commandeering a
private automobile, took him to the hospital, where Dr. BURT found he
had sustained a fractured skull and internal injuries and was dead.
Under questioning, RUSSO told the police he was traveling east on
Carroll street and, as he was about to turn on Third avenue, the boy,
who was one of three playing on the sidewalk, ran in front of the truck,
and the wheels passed over his body, although the driver put his brakes
on, he explained.
RUSSO was not arrested, but he was held for questioning.

being notified of the accident. She later returned, grief stricken.

FIND MAN SLAIN IN DYKER PARK
Victim Believed Missing Tailor of Corona
The mutilated body of a man, stabbed more that twenty-five times and
with head nearly served[sic], was found early to-day in a clump of
bushes on the edge of Dyker Beach Park, in Eighty-sixth street, about
100 feet from Twelfth avenue.
One of several cards found in the man's pockets bore the name of C.
MARINO, a tailor, of 57 East Jackson avenue, Corona, who has also a
branch office at 255 Forty-sixth street, Corona. Detectives calling at
the first address were informed by a Mrs. MARINO living there that her
husband had left home yesterday morning at 9 o'clock and had not
returned. She was to go to the Fort Hamilton police station this
afternoon to view the victim's body.
The discovery was made by William LAVINE, of 629 Eighty-fourth street,
who noticed blood stains while passing the spot on his way to work at
the clubhouse of a golf course nearby. He called the Fort Hamiliton
police station, and Dr. WINDOFF of Norwegian Hospital responded to a
police call.
	Head Nearly Severed
According to the ambulance surgeon, the man, who was abut 47 years old,
five feet eleven inches tall, and weighed 250 pounds, was apparently
murdered with a butcher knife.
All the wounds were deep, according to the police, and the head was
nearly severed. The victim had been stabbed in the chest, back, under
the ribs, in the neck and the arteries of the legs were severed.
Police are of the opinion that the man was "taken for a ride" in
ganster parlance, as the blood trail began at the curb stone and
streaked across the sidewalk to the bushes. They believed he was
brought to the spot in an automobile from another point in the city.
When found the mas wore a gray suit, gray socks, tan shoes and white
shirt. There was $57 and a gold watch in the man's pockets, indicating
death was not due to robbery.
Fort Hamilton police said they understood there has been a labor dispute
among tailors of Queens ane are inclined to hold a revenge theory in the crime.
	Tailor Believed Victim
Capt. John J. RYAN, in charge of detectives of the section, said he
thought the card identifies its victim. The man's clothing was dry,
indicating, police say, that he had not been lying on the spot during
the rain of the early morning hours.
The spot where the body was found is only about one mile from the home
of the late "Frankie" YALE, murdered gang leader, which is at Fourteenth
avenue and Sixty-fifth street.

WIFE SLASHED DOCTOR TO DEATH DURING ROW OVER GOSSIP OF LOVES
Mrs. Glen KIRKWOOD Wields Bread Knife, Then Runs From Woodside Home
Seeking Physician - Is Held for Murder
Gossip reared up its udly head to-day and spat venom, disrupting an
erstwhile happy family; leaving a prominent veterinarian dead by
violence and his wife, a bride of a year, under arrest as his murderer.
An attractive brunette, her jealousy inflamed by neighborhood
whisperings, Mrs. Frances KIRKWOOD, 32 years old, of 41-30 Forty-seventh
street, Sunnyside Gardens, Woodside, Queens, brandished a breadknife
wildly in her home early to-day during a quarrel with her husband about
"other women," then, as he sank dying, she rushed frantically to the
street, screaming for aid.
Her husband, Dr. Glen KIRKWOOD, twenty-six, died on an operation table
in St. John's Hospital, Long Island City, where he was taken after his
remorseful wife had summond aid.
	Signs Confession, Claim
Mrs. KIRKWOOD "made a complete signed confession," it was asserted
several hours later by District Attorney Richard S. NEWCOMBE after he
had questioned her for more that an hour. He refused to make public the
statement.
Mrs. KIRKWOOD was arrested on a charge of murder as soon as her
husband's death was announced. She admitted having stabbed him in the
abdomen with the bread cutter, police asserted.
The jealous wife of the veterinarian, who was known to many radio
listeners as an expert on animal life and endeared to them by his
broadcast chats on samll pets, unfolded to police a tale of domestic
doubt and of accepting neighborhood gosip[sic] in the face of her
husband's denial.
The tragedy climaxed a series of bitter quarrels lasting for hours at a
time over parts of four days, she is said to have told the police.
After having patched up a truce Sunday, when they went out motoring
together, the KIRKWOODs broke out fresh into their family dispute last
night , as Mrs. KIRKWOOD told questioners at Hunters Point police station.
	Runs to Summon Aid
Mrs. KIRKWOOD had hastened home Saturday from a vacation trip to
confront her husband with the gossip of his friendships with other women
during her absence. As she upbraided him with bitter recriminations, he
denied the accusations, but the quarreling persisted.
Then came Sunday's truce, followed by the fresh outburst of argument
last night, which lasted well into early morning.
It ended at about 5 o'clock this morning in the kitchen of the suburban home.
Dropping the breadknife from her hand, police say Mrs. KIRKWOOD told
them, she glanced at her husband, prostrate, with a gaping wound, then
ran outside screaming out:
    "My husband is hurt."
Attracting attention of neighbors, she returned with them to the house.
	Dies in Hospital
Patrolman Dennis GANNON, notified by telephone, said he found KIRKWOOD
lying on the livingroom floor, attired in underclothing. Mrs. KIRKWOOD,
he said, was upstairs, walking back and forth frantically, and saying
hysterically: "I have killed my husband."
The living room showed signs of a struggle, he said, and Mrs. KIRKWOOD,
talking disconnectedly, told him she had "gone to get the breadknife to
defend myself."
GANNON summoned an ambulance, and Dr. STEIMLER, after continuing the
hurried first aid treatment started by the policeman, accompanied
KIRKWOOD to the hospital. Without gaining consciousness, the
veterinarian died as surgeons prepared to operate in a vain effort to
save his life.
	Knife Life Scimitar
The death knife was taken to the police station by GANNON.
Black-handled, it has a 10-inch blade with a smooth edge and a point
like a scimitar.
This afternoon detectives were sent out to summon neighbors of the
KIRKWOODs, who were to be questioned about the killing and the events
leading up to it.
Mrs. KIRKWOOD, plump, charming of personality despite her distraught
condition, her attractiveness enhanced by a modish garb, meanwhile was
undergoing the ordeal of police grilling.
Deputy Inspector John GALLAGHER, in charge of Queen detectives, then
Assistant District Attorney NEWCOMBE questioned her. Readily, the
police say, she told them of the gossip and the quarrels and the frantic
finish she had put to them, frankly admitting the fatal stabbing with
the household tool.
	"Whispering" Loud
Mrs. KIRKWOOD said she learned of the neighborhood whisperings about her
husband entertaining other women while she was on a four-week vacation
at Lake Ronkonkoma, L.I. Even after her husband denied the first bits
of gossip, Mrs. KIRKWOOD said, the whispering and winking continued and
grew.
As the gossip inflamed her and her angry accusations widened the gulf
that had grown between her and Dr. KIRKWOOD, the wife said, relations
became strained, and bickering became almost constant during the last
few days, with the veterinarian, apparently, remaining firm in his
denials.
The marriage of the KIRKWOODs about a year ago was the second for Mrs.
KIRKWOOD. Divorce ended her first marriage, leaving her with a son, Lee
McAVOY, now twelve years old. Mrs. KIRKWOOD left the boy at the lake
when she returned to sift the gossip about about her husband.
Dr. KIRKWOOD had an office in Woodside Theatre Building, Woodside. He
was held in wide regard as an expert on animal life, particularly in
reference to small household pets, and it was on these he spoke chiefly
in his many talks from several radio stations.

Dying Man's Word Leads to Arrest
A mumbled deathbed accusation by a man whose body was riddled with bullets
as the answer to his argument to-day confronted Frank MARELLO, 48 years old,
formerly of 29 Skillman avenue, after a lapse of two years, during which he
eluded unceasing pursuit.
Spurred by a long memory, the long arm of the law reached out from
Williamsburgh to South Norwalk, Conn., from which place MARELLO was brought
to day by Detective John COSGROVE, of Greenpoint station. He was locked up
to wait arraignment in Homicide Court. He had waived extradition.
For more than two years, Detective COSGROVE had sought for trace of MARELLO.
Monday he was told by an acquaintance back from a vacation trip, "The man
you are looking for is in Connecticut. I saw him working there."
COSGROVE went to South Norwalk and found MARELLO working as a laborer.
On May 30, 1926, John LYDON, 38 of 268 Engert avenue, was found at Kingsland
and Greenpoint avenues with six bullets in his body, after a dispute with a
group of men in Calvary Cemetery, where he worked.
