Dessed in student gowns of maroon and white, the school colors, eighty-six
girls, composing the June graduating class of the Bay Ridge High School.
Miss Roberta BENNETT was given a gold medal, the reward for maintaining the
highest average in all studies for four years. Miss Bennett also won first
honors for the study of biology and Latin.
Miss Bessie FERGUSON and Miss Mildred NEAHER won the honors for bookkeeping;
Miss Ada SILVERMAN, for stenography;
Miss Shirley BILLINGS, for music;
Miss Sigrid ANDERSON, for physical science,
Miss Beatrice ALLEN
Miss MAbel REINHART, for typewriting.
Three medals were awarded for distinguished service to the school. One went
to Miss Dorothy SMEDLEY for her work on "Maroon and White," the school
publication; another to Miss Shirley BILLINGS for three and a half years'
service with the school orchestra. Miss Helen GREEN was given a medal for
her work in mathematics. The Institut Francais Aux Etats-Unis medal, a
decordation awarded by the French Institute of Paris for proficiency in the
study of the French language, went to Miss Beatrice JOHNSON.
Miss TURNER paid a high tribute to Miss Olga DAHM, a graduate who was absent
from the exercises because a serious illness confined her to bed. Miss DAHM
was seriously ill when the final examinations for graduation were made, but
she asked that she be allowed to take them at her home. Propped up in bed,
with a member of the faculty at her bedside, the girl worked over the
questions and problems and came through with a high mark. Miss Olive LING,
class president, took the diploma on Miss DAHM's behalf while the audience
applauded the absent graduate.
Another interesting graduate was Miss Olive LING, a Chinese girl who,
besides being president of the class, was head girl of the Arita, honor
society of the school. Miss LING also wrote the words of the graduates'
class song. Miss Idalaura NORTON wrote the music.
